Oil Artist

Ed Hawkins is a self-taught artist and dedicated instructor whose work in oil painting reflects a deep commitment to realism. Since joining Main Street Gallery in Brighton, Colorado, as a studio artist in 2013, Ed has become a cornerstone of the gallery’s creative community. He began teaching oil painting in 2014, offering classes to teens and adults of all skill levels. His favorite subjects—landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and figurative works—showcase his attention to detail and his passion for the beauty of the world around us.

Ed’s influence extends far beyond the canvas. As a teacher, mentor, and gallery spokesperson, he gives his heart and soul to supporting the arts in Brighton. He has organized numerous artist salons and open houses, creating space for connection, dialogue, and inspiration. In 2017, his concept for a collaborative mural—an elephant emerging from the wall of a downtown building—was selected as part of the City of Brighton’s Big Little Idea program. That same year, he received the Brighton Cultural Arts Connection’s Excellence in Arts Award in the Beyond Brighton category.

Before fully embracing his artistic path, Ed worked in a variety of roles, including shoe repairman, facilities manager, computer programmer, and intranet data analyst. Despite this eclectic background, art remained a constant presence in his life, beginning with his childhood in England and evolving over time from hobby to profession. In addition to his visual art, Ed has painted sets for youth theater and church services and performs as a keyboardist in a worship band.

Through his creativity, leadership, and generosity, Ed Hawkins continues to enrich the cultural life of Brighton, inspiring students and community members alike.
